The flea market, which both of us were involved in launching in the mid-1970s, was the brainchild of community activist Pat McClintock as a way to raise funds for over a dozen Berkeley nonprofit organizations providing services from health care and housing to child care and disability rights. The Market became an essential stop for Berkeley residents seeking low-cost furniture, used clothing and community. At the time, several of these organizations were struggling to survive, and to get beyond the annual cycle of begging the city council for small grants that often made the difference between survival and shutting down. Community Services United, a grassroots organization was formed to enhance our collective lobbying power and improve our services together.

Our Values
Community Services United advances inclusion by creating accessible activities, meaningful connections, and joyful community experiences for people of all abilities and disabilities. Even more, the Berkeley Flea Market is one of the nation’s few – and potentially California’s first – community flea markets integrating outdoor vending, a permanent retail storefront, and a unified online marketplace. Through education, recreation, and community partnerships, we empower individuals and strengthen belonging throughout the Berkeley South and West communities.
